  • Peering MCSIX - MCS Internet eXchange

February 14, 2011 by Iwan Hanafi

  • Dear Valued Customer

    [root@rmt ~]# traceroute www.google.com
traceroute to www.google.com (74.125.235.49), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets
     1  202.59.201.65 (202.59.201.65)  0.987 ms  1.159 ms  1.144 ms

    MCSIX - MCS Internet eXchange

    http://www.sutrisno.me/2010/12/mcsix-mcs-internet-exchange.html

A new IX has emerge in Indonesia, its name is MCSIX or MIX (MCS Internet eXchange). The IX was created by NAP Info Lintas Nusa and located in Jakarta, Indonesia. The name MCS is referring to Matrix Cable System between Singapore and Jakarta, NAP Info is the co-owner of that sub sea cable. This new IX could be the alternative route for Indonesia ISP.

As we know the largest Indonesia IX is OpenIXP. But due to the problem with Cyber Building (refer to this and this), this IX might have some serious issue in the future. I always wonder, why IX situation in Indonesia is very bleak. Seems to be everybody is fighting each other instead of working together to make it big. Looking back at some disputes between OpenIXP and APJII in 2006-2007. Nobody is a winner here, instead IIX is left in the comatose state and OpenIXP became the de facto IX of Indonesia.

There is a new breath of air to IIX/APJII, when Indonesia 3rd largest mobile operator XL Axiata donated 2 Juniper M7 routers and some switches (1) for the good cause of IPv6 adoption and more BW growth in the future. The question is how far can the M7 routers support the growth of IIX, considering its an entry level router with a mere 4Gbps aggregate throughput. That is simply not enough to support a national IX, a simple comparison the traffic level in OpenIXP is already 45Gbps in Nov 2010 (2).

Hopefully with MCSIX, it could contribute to a cheaper internet bill to the end user. Indonesia internet has been growing fast and steadily for the past 2 years, ever since the international access is not monopolized by Indosat.

Lastly I just want to say: Monopoly is never good, competition creates innovation.
